As part of our 2010 summer season we are introducing a new course…………………………….
Three days intensive, explorative rehearsal, focusing on text, embodiment of character, relationships, physical connection and emotional courage, culminating in an 'open' rehearsal to which Co-Opera Co. will be inviting agents and managements
These three day courses are designed to help you explore every aspect of performing on the operatic stage. You will be working on operatic scenes chosen to suit you personally –once we have six to eight singers for each workshop, we will choose the scenes which will suit you best. As well as the work you will do with the members taking the courses - John Graham- Hall, Jacquie Crago and Harry Nicoll, and Sally Burgess - you will also have the chance to have private coaching from Co-Opera Co. music staff. The three days will culminate in an “open rehearsal” to which members of the public will be encouraged to attend and to which Co-Opera Co. will be inviting agents and managements.
The cost of the three days is just £200 to include private coaching
places are limited to 6 to 8 singers

Members leading the courses
John Graham-Hall August 4th, 5th, 6th.
John Graham-Hall came into the profession by a classic route: choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge; then the Royal College of Music. In the 25 years since he rose to fame, singing the role of that naive innocent Albert Herring in a classic Glyndebourne production of Britten’s opera, he has portrayed a myriad of roles; for the Royal Opera House, Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos and Monostatos, for Glyndebourne, Vanya Kudrjasin Katya Kabanova‚ Flute in Midsummer Night’s Dream‚ Basilio and Bob Boles, for ENO Valzacchi‚ Basilio‚ Monostatos‚ Lysander ,Mime‚ Herod‚ Sylvester in The Silver Tassie‚ Goro‚ Triquet‚ Shabby Peasant in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Alwa in Lulu. For Opera North Mayor Albert Herring‚ Elcius Croesus and Dr Caius. John is in great demand abroad singing at all the major opera houses and festivals throughout Europe . Perhaps because he does conjure such memorable characters, John’s schedule is packed; Aschenbach in Deborah Warner’s Brussels production of Death in Venice, Broucek with Opera North and David Alden’s new ENO staging of Katya Kabanova
“The work I want to do is to explore and hone the singer’s most important asset– communication. What an audience responds to is honesty and openness – when we are concerned about our sound, honesty flies into the wings and we lose all credibility. This will be three days of intensive, explorative rehearsal, focusing on text, embodiment of character, relationships, physical connection and emotional courage. We will push the boundaries both vocally but most importantly dramatically and get to the point where acting and singing are the same impulse. Everything needs to be joined up: vocal technique, characterisation, pointing the text, moving across the stage and most importantly, communication - if you can’t communicate your meaning directly, you might as well pack singing in. As soon as we articulate the text, the whole thing lights up.”

“.......of course, like so many people, I was a little sceptical as to whether it would really live up to what you were suggesting on the website. Several of the people I recommended to get involved were equally sceptical, so I shall be letting them know that it really is that good! So many other organisations boast big names as part of the operation but they’re really just names, in the end – they don’t actually do anything. It’s amazing that you truly have got all these fabulous people contributing in a real and meaningful way.." Liz Roberts

“Thank you for such an inspirational and exciting weekend! The quality and delivery of teaching was very high and it's just a shame that it was only 2 days. It was just great to be 'zapped' from all angles with direction, info, dancing and choreography, general stagecraft, technique, language etc from so many fine musicians - almost too much to take at once and my head was spinning but it was worth it.” Julian Guidera
